To figure out how much tree cover each part of Jefferson Parish has, neighborhood and city boundaries were added to the maps showing where trees are currently located. This helped calculate the percentage of tree cover in each neighborhood and city. Lakes, rivers, and other water areas were left out, so the numbers only reflect land area. Each area was given a tree cover percentage and put into one of six groups based on that number:

  1. 0% to 10%

  2. 10% to 20%

  3. 20% to 30%

  4. 30% to 40%

  5. 40% to 50%

  6. greater than 50%

Although Grand Isle has less than 10% canopy coverage, we do not recommend spending money on tree planting there. The island gets natural cooling from coastal winds and, more importantly, faces more urgent needs related to flooding that should take priority.
